Teen stick fighter to get Capitol award tonight
By Marian C. Baring
Sunstar Correspondent

A young Cebuano stick fighter, who harvested gold medals in the Arnis World Championships, will be among those feted in Garbo sa Sugbo Awarding today at the Capitol.

Ray Rubin Chan won two gold medals in the 9th World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation Championship at the Dolphin Hotel at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, early last month.

He will be awarded together with other Cebuano standouts in their respective fields, today during the province’s celebration of the 437th founding anniversary.

Chan, a two-time world champion, outclassed his competitors in the Juniors forms and juniors middleweight sparring division during the weeklong tournament, which was competed in by arnisadors from Wekaf’s more than 20 member-countries.

Annual awards

Garbo sa Sugbo is an awarding done annually by the Cebu province, which honors Cebuanos, who have excelled in their respective fields and lifting Cebu’s banner national or in the international scene.

Chan, a second year high school student of Maria Montessori Children’s House, will join the ranks of Judge Simeon Dumdum Jr. (judiciary), Archbishop Francisco Padilla (diplomatic service to the Holy See), Aida Labra Makk, an internationally acclaimed solo concert pianist, chamber musician and music educator and Fe Sala Villarica, founder of Ballet Center, among many others, who will be catapulted into the history books as someone who has given Cebuanos a reason to be proud.

9 medals

Chan, together with the lean RP team, had won nine medals in the world championships.

The other Cebuanos who had won in their respective divisions are Marie Therese Borces, in the women's multiple weapon form; Ruth Arcilla, in the women's double stick sparring featherweight division team; Rowena Opigal, in the women's forms single stick; Remegio Berandoy, in the men's form single stick and Jaime Jake Morales in juniors single stick form.
