Two teams fight for lead in vice guv softball tilt
Barangay Mulao Proper and Sitio Bantayan will play for high stakes today — solo leadership in the team standings of the 1st Vice Governor Greg Sanchez Cup Inter-Barangay Softball Tournament at Compostela, Cebu.
Mulao Proper, with a 3-0 score card, is looking for their fourth straight win, but Sitio Bantayan’s batters, undefeated in two games, aren’t about to give up a winning streak.
The Mulao Proper-Sitio Bantayan tussle will take center stage at 8 a.m. today and hopefully set the pace for another team who will try to earn its first win of the series.
Cabadiangan, winless in two outings, will take on an equally luckless Barangay Lupa, 0-1, in the second game at 10 a.m. Mulao Proper will be back in the field, as they will duel against Barangay Basak at 1 p.m.
Barangay Lupa will return at 3 p.m. for their match against Barangay Panangban.
Chess
As this developed, its all-systems-go for the Cebu leg of the 14th Shell National Active Chess Championships.
Last year’s national finalists - Kim Steven Yap of University of San Carlos, Zilberstein Torres of Cebu Institute of Technology and Zamboanga City’s Patrick Florendo - are expected to see action in the heavily contested junior division.
In the kiddies category, it will be a battle royale between last year’s defending champion, Yves Fiel, and last year’s runner-up, Lennon Salgados, as they try once more to outplay each other for a slot in the nationals.
Fiel is from Argao, Cebu, while Salgados is from Bonbon in Cagayan de Oro City.
With the theme “The search for the future grandmasters continue,” the event will be held at the SM Cebu Atrium and will open on Aug. 19.
Contenders
The other title contenders in the junior divisions are Eric Abeneo and Steven Aguirre of Bacolod City, Edgardo Derequito of Zamboanga City, Bohol’s Michael Pagaran and Carl Villaruz.
Players from Cebu City schools, such as Christian Robillos of University of Cebu, Yuri Cauba of University of San Jose Recoletos and Vernacio Loyola, are also in contention.
In the kiddies match are Jessa Balbona of Cebu City, Jedara Docena of Tagbilaran City, Jeyan Cayeras and Redan Espelita of Escalante, Negros Occidental and Joey Florendo of Zamboanga City.
The registrations for the juniors and kiddies divisions are already closed.
National Master Ben Macapaz, tournament coordinator and arbiter, said only the first registered 500 players can play in each leg. (JAF)
