Cebu slots 32 goals

After a loss to the hosts dampened its semifinal bid, the Cebu Football Association ladies team needed to bury Sultan Kudarat FA by 22 goals yesterday.

They did just that and, for good measure, sinked 10 more goals as Cebu scored the most lopsided win in the Philippine Football Federation National Women's Open, 32-0, yesterday in Dumaguete City.

That’s about one goal scored every three minutes.

The match was so lopsided that Cebu could have played minus a goalkeeper and still win.

"I never got to touch the ball," said keeper Carmel Openiano, who got wet not from sweating as she was never part of the action, but from the on and off drizzle.

"The Sultan Kudarat players are very big, but they are new to the game," said Cebu FA coach Dexter Arrojado.

The win, which eclipsed Iligan's previous output of 21-0 against the same team, earned Cebu, represented by players from Queen City plus a few reinforcements, a spot in the final four on Friday against Dumaguete.

"We are really going to prepare hard for this (game against Dumaguete," said Arrojado.

Dumaguete scored a late goal in its 2-1 win over Cebu last Tuesday.

Favorites National Capitol Region and defending champion Davao City —which both have national team mainstays-will face each other in the other semifinal.

Dumaguete City finished on top of Group C after beating Iligan City, 2-0.

Yesterday, Cebu took two minutes before scoring their first goal but at the end of the first half, they were already ahead, 17-0, needing six more goals to eclipse Iligan for the last semifinal spot.

Ten minutes in, they scored their 22nd goal to seal their entry to the knockout round.

The win broke Cebu's previous record in the national finals in 2004 when they routed Quezon City, 26-0, with Arrojado also at the helm.

Marlou Solon led the barrage with 11 goals, while Katrina Bejec and Jan Salac and six and five, respectively. The young Presley Cunningham and veteran Carmel Colina also had three goals each in yesterday's rout.
