A Cebu City-based businessman led the medal haulers as the shotgun squad of Team Philippines blazed through the Singapore Inaugural PPC WA1500 Shooting Competition that closed last Tuesday.

Gerry Velez, who also represented the country in the shotgun matches of the last Southeast Asian Games (Seag) clinched the gold in the individual pump-action event, picked up another gold in the team event and, later, snatched a bronze in the team semi-automatic shotgun category.

“We posted the shortest time in the early stages of the (semi-automatic) event but my shotgun began to malfunction,” he said. He was the lone Cebuano of the team sponsored by the Philippine National Shooting Association.

The entire squad, headed by Coach German de los Santos, put up a strong showing in the weeklong match that opened last Aug. 1 at the sprawling Singapore Shooting Association-National Shooting Centre Firing Range in at the Old Choa Chu Kang Road.

Bronze medal

Aside from the gold in the individual pump-action event, the shotgun squad also clinched the event’s bronze medal through shooter Gerardo Manabat.

The silver, however, went to powerhouse player Lawrence Wee of Team Singapore.

In the individual semi-automatic event, Team Philippines also lost the gold to Singaporean policeman Tan Gua Hou. However, shooters Ariel Santos and Eduardo Yao posted back-to-back wins to pay back the loss with a silver and bronze.

Even the pistol team, anchored by another Seag veteran navy lieutenant Marly Llorito scored a silver in the team event, said a report prepared by PNSA vice president Romeo Rivera.

The team was composed of Llorito, Capt. Noel Tiu of the Philippine Marines, T/Sgt. John Costales, also of the Marines, and civilian shooter Luis Lee.

Difficulties

“The match management made certain modifications. They used a different target. Bulilyaso lahat yung hindi naka adjust (Those who weren’t able to adjust had a hard time,” Llorito said in an interview yesterday.

PPC stands for Precision Pistol Course and WA1500 is short for World Association 1500. The international group, to which the Philippines became a member last year, is so called because a perfect score for the matches it holds is 1500.

The shotgun event is composed of four different stages that require a shooter to engage a given number of metal targets from a given shooting box.

Each shooter has four attempts at each stage and only the best time is submitted for the count. Aggregate time is computed and the lowest overall time wins.

The pistol event, meanwhile, requires a shooter to engage a number of paper bull’s eye target at variable distances under a stated timeframe.

Shots fired outside the given timeframe are awarded a penalty. Missed shots also merit penalties. A total of 150 rounds are fired in an event and target ranges vary from seven to 50 yards.
