Cecaba All-Stars dump foes; Scbhaba-M. Lhuillier wins
Similar lopsided victories scored by the Pilipinas Shell-backed Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association (Cecaba) All-Stars and San Carlos Boys High Alumni Basketball Association (Scbhaba)-M. Lhuillier over their rivals marked the start of the semifinal wars of the 2006 Executives Cup basketball tournament at the City Sports Club-Cebu gym last Tuesday.
The Cecaba All-Stars under head coach Elmer "Boy" Cabahug inked the first victory in the semis as they employed a leech-like defensive ploy in extracting revenge over Jaycees Basketball Association-Purcia Transport/Crunchiken, 68-54, in the opening match-up.
The Scbhaba quintet replicated Cecaba's masterful victory although with a different tactic as they used an aggressive offense in registering their own version of a massacre by trouncing on Team Barkada, 103-87, in the main thriller.
With their opening-game wins in the semis, the Cecaba All-Stars and Scbhaba are knocking loudly on the Finals door and if they're successful in the respective bids in today's game, the two teams will find each other staring face-to-face for a titular showdown.
In snapping out of its two-game losing slump to JBA, defense was the key element for the Cecaba All-Stars as coach Cabahug slyly reconfigured his team into a mean defensive machine that left JBA's offense in chaos, particularly on the games of JBA's Archie Coros, James Lloyd Noel and Edmund Odulio.
The trio were limited to a combined production of 33 points.
The scores:
1st game: Cecaba All-Stars (68)—W. Yu 16, E. Yu 13, R. Yu 10, Cokaliong 10, Sia 8, S. Tan 6, Chan 5. JBA Selection (54)—Coros 15, Noel 11, Odulio 8, Jayme 8, Cortez 8, Chua 4.
