Media play important role in human formation: Vidal
Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal acknowledged the role of media in human formation even though some practitioners “talk fast and write instantly, whoever gets hurt.”
Vidal paid tribute to the media Wednesday night at the Cebu Country Club.
“As archbishop of Cebu for 25 years already, this year of the Lord 2006, I now feel more than ever before the need for human formation through and in media,” Vidal said in his message.
“This day and age of high technology, of fast foods, and instant coffee, what is human, what is man-made and woman-made, is more often than not set aside and ignored,” he said.
Vidal said “there is always to temptation to talk without thinking and to write without meaning.”
“That’s why there is so much anger, so much violence, so much inhumanity when we talk fast and write instantly whoever gets hurt,” said Vidal.
Activities
The event launched three archdiocesan activities—the Regional Catholic Media Directors’ Forum, Cebu Archdiocesan Mass Media Awards (Camma) 2007 and the Catholic Cable TV Network (CCTN) re-launching dubbed as INTV.
Bishop Bernardino Cortez of the Commission on Worship, in his opening remarks, said media outlets should strive to be an “apostolate” or one that is run by apostles.
He said some media outlets have become a source of power since politicians run them, while others have become business-oriented because businessmen manage them.
The Camma 2007 was also launched Wednesday night. The Camma is Vidal’s brainchild. He created it in 1992. It recognizes achievement of excellence in mass media.
The awards will be handed out in August next year. The committee is already accepting nominations this month.
Sun.Star Cebu was elevated into the Camma Hall of Fame in 1994, after winning the Best Newspaper Award for three consecutive years. Several staff members of the paper also have individually won Cammas.
Youth
Meanwhile, CCTN also launched INTV that aims to “inspire and inform” with more focus on the youth and the Roman Catholic families.
Vidal is the Chairman of CCTN while Bro. Nonito Limchua sits as president.
The three events were launched in time for the Cardinal’s 25th year as Archbishop of Cebu. (JGA)
