Seares: Gloria and the butchers By Pachico A. Seares News Sense
With all the clamor for the truth about charges of election rigging and corruption, one would think President Arroyo would allow impeachment to go to trial.
No way. Expect the House committee, packed with Gloria allies, to throw out the complaint for lack of substance.
This week's approval as to form was throwing crumbs; next week, they will be mean.
With all the flak against cutting up Cebu into four provinces, one would think butchers Clavel Martinez, Antonio Yapha, and Sim Kintanar would lay down their hacking knives.
Not a chance. The three House members are pushing on. Committee approval was not huge but still it was a victory of sorts for Sugbuak.
Survival
Why all this persistence and stubbornness?
Despite severe public lashing against their stand, they hang in and tough it out.
Most sectors, including the bishops, have asked Glo to face trial. Cebuanos have roundly thrashed Sugbuak as a greedy retirement plan and asked its authors to drop it.
Why then? For both Glo and the Sugbuak Three, it is a matter of survival.
Besides, the process is there. Impeachment mechanism allows Glo to block it by ways prescribed by law. Legislative mill allows Sugbuak authors to move their bills.
Never mind the wound Glo inflicts on governance and national psyche. Disregard the insult Sugbuak masterminds fling to Cebuanos' faces.
Dumb as it may seem, it is the process.
