Cesafi suspension catches USC asst. coach by surprise
University of San Carlos Warriors assistant coach Mike Reyes was surprised with the suspension meted on him by the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi).
However, he will not appeal the decision.
Reyes, who was slapped with a one-game suspension for unsportsmanlike behavior, said he will no longer file an appeal because “nothing is going to happen anyway.”
According to Cesafi rules, anyone has the right to make an appeal before the Cesafi board of directors.
“Hindi na. Tatanggapin nalang namin. Kung mag-aappeal kami, wala ring mangyayari,” Reyes said.
Reyes also stood firm in saying that he never committed anything that would get him suspended.
“Nagtataka lang ako why they are accusing me of throwing the eraser, when they have not seen it for themselves. I never threw an eraser,” Reyes said.
The incident report filed by deputy commissioner Julian Macoy, who was at the sidelines, stated that Reyes tried to hurl a white board eraser on the court.
Trust
Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy, however, said that apart from trusting the word of his deputy, they also reviewed the video of the game, which was recorded by television station CCTN channel 47.
“It clearly showed him throwing that eraser. The eraser was flying towards the referee and landed near him,” Tiukinhoy said.
The referee, Eddie Amodia, was banned for the entire season after his failure to call a technical foul on Reyes at that point, despite prodding from the technical committee to do so.
Reyes also cast doubts on why he was being suspended on the game that they are supposed to play against the University of Cebu Webmasters.
“When that happened, it was a Saturday (July29), so if they suspend me, it should have been on our next scheduled game, which is the Wednesday after that, when we played against CIT. Nakakapagtaka lang na now that we will go against UC, ngayon ako masu-suspend,” he said.
In his defense, Tiukinhoy said that he wanted to have a due process before giving out any penalties.
Explanation
“Right after reading the incident report, I wrote to the parties involved and have them explain why they should not be sanctioned. I only received their replies last Saturday, Aug. 5, so only after hearing all sides could I make a decision,” Tiukinhoy said.
The suspension was handed down last Monday, which is to take effect on the very next game.
Reyes, who is also the basketball director of USC, said the suspension is definitely going to affect his wards.
“It will affect their morale and we need to win as many games as we can. On a brighter side, this happening could also be a motivating factor for the players. We will maximize it and make it work for our side,” Reyes said.
USC will be going against UC in the main offering this Saturday at 5:30 p. second round) picks. (JSV with PBA media bureau)
