Fitness guru Gitaruelas books slot in Milo race By Jade S. Violeta Sun.Star Staff Reporter
With her toughest rival already out of the picture, defending Women’s champion Cristy Sevilleno is expected to cruise an easier path towards another regional title and a seat in the 42K Milo Marathon national finals when the 2006 Milo Marathon Cebu regional elimination blasts off this Aug. 27.
While Sevilleno is yet to take a crack at a spot for the national competition, her runner up in last year’s regional elimination, Liezl Gitaruelas, already booked herself a spot in the 42K full marathon in Manila on Dec. 10 .
This as Gitaruelas, a fitness aerobics instructor of the Cebu City Sports Center, dominated the Davao leg of the race with a clocking of one hour, 24 minutes and 48 seconds.
Gitaruelas reasoned out that she opted to race in Davao City as she is scheduled to compete in the Mount Kinabalu 21K Climbathon in September, and is currently training for this Malaysian stint at Mount Apo in Kidapawan.
The UC Webmasters track superstar, Sevilleno, though, will still have her hands full in defending her regional crown as the other top Cebu runners are expected to give her a tight race.
Among them are Sharon Vega, Mylene Jarina, Doris Nudalo, Genalyn Jaum, Leonara Martus, Evangeline Balazuela and Olga Parra.
In the men’s division, the 26-year-old defending titlist Rogelio Reli is expected to be given a run for his money by Joseph Penales, Roland Montebon, Adonis Singson, Mendel Lopez, Greg Canumay, John Dueñas, Tomas Nuñez, Romil Lumindas and Bonifacio Monjas.
