Tapaya secures BTA July title
Luther Tapaya finally snagged a title in the Bowlingplex Tenpin Association monthly contest, bagging the July Men’s Division title the other day at the Gaisano Bowlingplex.
It was sweet revenge for Tapaya, whose previous best finish this year was second to two-time winner Junjun Gothong last May.
Tapaya brushed off a sloppy start to pull out a squeaker for the win. Tapaya knocked down a total of 1,881 pins in the nine-game series, holding a shaky one-point lead over second placer Gothong, who had 1,880 pinfalls.
Tapaya was nowhere near the top five in the first game, when he only scored 160 pins. He bounced back in the second game and scored 257 to knock Gothong out of the top spot for good.
Taking third place is Wilbert Yu, who logged a total of 1,845 pinfalls, while Manny Tiu took the next spot with 1,803. Clarence Tiu and Bel Suelto Jr. complete the top five list.
Tapaya already has a reserved slot for the Bowler of the Year after his May stint. Second placer Gothong is already a qualifier, which relents the slot to Yu, the third placer.
The other qualifiers for the annual Bowler of the Year competition are Ed San Jose (February), Clark Tiu (March), Clarence Tiu (April) and Suelto (June). (MCB)
