Cebuano poet’s work to be published by UP

The University of the Philippines (UP) Institute of Creative Writing has approved and accepted Sun.

Star Superbalita consultant Ernesto Lariosa’s first Cebuano epic poem.

Kalisub is a poem composed of 1,500 lines in a 112-page short bond paper, rhymed and measured in a pure rhythmical Cebuano language.

Kalisub is the second and last part of Lariosa’s fellowship grant requirement with the institute, also known as Likhaan.

He received the grant in 2004 and accomplished the first requirement through a lecture on Cebuano literature, which was attended by Likhaan’s workshop writing fellows and panelists led by national artist for literature Virgilio Almario in Baguio City.

The literary work is based on the exploits, romance and adventure of three famous legendary characters like Bali-Alho, Sagpo-Baha and Tulod-Bungtod who became trusted warriors of Rajah Lapu-Lapu.

Kalisub gives a fresh insight by featuring Bali-Alho in a mortal combat with Portuguese conqueror Ferdinand Magellan and killed the latter with a wooden alho or pestle.

The epic also narrates incidents that could explain Bali-Alho’s secret love affair with Bulakna, Lapu-Lapu’s wife.

Lariosa noted different stories about the legendary characters as he gathered materials for almost two years.

He talked to some tambalan, occultists, septuagenerians and village charlatans but it was the tale of his great grandfather that caught his fancy and still holds his interest to this day and was the basis of his epic poem.

Lariosa is a Palanca award-winning writer and poet, and a winner of the Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas (Lifetime Achievement Award) in Cebuano poetry and fiction given by the Unyon ng Manunulat sa Pilipinas.

It took him more than a year to finish Kalisub, which means sparkle in English and a reverse of the Cebuano word “busilak.”

UP will publish Kalisub and Almario with introduce the book.
