Serna: The one
By Roger Serna: Sounds and images

The movie trailer that shows Toni Gonzaga trying to smell the fragrance (or otherwise) of Sam Milby’s hair with eyes closed, and Sam turning to her direction and catching her in that awkward situation immediately caught my attention and made me smile.

It was well portrayed by the two that one thinks it’s a real life situation that they had been into. Actually, it’s one of the hilarious scenes from the movie which the two popular stars topbill, Star Cinema’s latest love offering.

The movie, You Are The One, gives the two the time to bond and know each other better, a luxury, which they both say they don’t have and has become an easy excuse for a much-publicized mutual attraction to get to first base and perhaps bloom.

The characters the two portray in this movie are subjected to many unpredictable twists that lead to uncomfortable and ridiculous situations. You Are The One is said to explore the insanities that come with love.

It will come to Cebu movie houses next Wed., Aug. 30. Can’t hardly wait?

Reggae is one music genre that has endured the test of time and even gained mainstream popularity. One of the many groups that has thanked the heavens for this development is Reggae Mistress which, after years of struggling, brought about by constant member turnover, has since established its stable of members and came up with a remarkable improvement in its music.

Having been exposed to reggae music in many beach parties and gigs during summer, yours truly has come to appreciate the music genre little by little, and Reggae Mistress’s music is a welcome development.

The group’s album The Sistahs Are Doin’ It that carries the hit Kaibigan and released by Sony BMG Music Entertainment is a collection of 12 all-original compositions which convey depth that unifies cultural Filipino sound with the Caribbean and Jamaican beat.

Composed of Rene Tengasantos, Irma Tengasantos, lead guitarist Mike Bewer, rhythm guitarist Andre Jalandoni, bassist Don Bautista, drummer Puto Gonzales, keyboardist Jay Yap and the singing ‘mistresses’: Irene Tengasantos, Ira Peñalosa and Karina Johnston, Reggae Mistress effectively puts together reggae, rock and roll, soul, jazz, pop and a little dance beat that gives the listeners a natural high.

With the sweet smile that she has come to be associated with constantly adorning her pretty face, visiting young star and GMA 7 contract artist Valerie Concepcion narrated how she has been thankful to the Almighty for the blessings she has been receiving lately in terms of TV and movie assignments.

This was over servings of mouth-watering adobo flakes, sizzling squid, yummy noodles and delicious beef chops, to name some, at the Lighthouse Restaurant last Sat., Aug. 12, just a few hours before she graced businessman Alexander Gaisano’s 56th birthday celebration at the grand hall of the White Gold House Restaurant at the north reclamation area.

Valerie also denied playing beautiful music together with Cebuano young actor Marco Alcaraz with whom she has been linked to lately. She said she knows that Marco has a Cebu-based girlfriend and that she doesn’t want to be just ‘pang-Manila’ with that mischievous smile not leaving her face.

With some of her current assignments on TV bowing out in due time, expect her to be in the new ones that will be aired sooner than you expect.

When yours truly dropped by Coach Pacquiao Fitness & Wellness Center at the third floor of JY Square Mall last Monday for some muscle flexing, the good-looking pool of trainors composed of Mike Vergello, Omar Dosdos, Alden Lugo, Eugene Lambayan and Jun Toledo were all absorbed in their respective tasks of assisting clients, some of whom are from the neighboring Asian country of Korea that anyone will think it was just an ordinary day.

Did I arrive late for the celebration or has it been scheduled right after the gym closes for the night? Whatever. What’s important was that I was able to greet Sir Alix Pacquiao a happy birthday which was met by a very amiable smile and a sincere ‘thank you.’

After having missed a few of their past offerings, yours truly finally got the time to view the advance screening of American Dreamz (yes, with a ‘z’) organized by WRock’s indefatigable husband-and-wife team of Chumby and Pinky Matias last Friday.

The riotous movie stars Hugh Grant, Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid (in an unexpected portrayal as US President who is on the verge of a nervous breakdown) and many more.

The movie focuses on a talent search which uses the reality format ala American Idol and the like. It also gets to dig on the conflict between the United States and the Middle East.

It had many amusing scenes that gave us in the audience fun time and made us leave the movie house feeling light and bubbly. Thanks, WRock!
