Sonny O statement comic relief amid deadline pressure: Gwen

Amid pressure to finish the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC), former senator John “Sonny” Osmeña provided Cebuanos a “comic relief,” Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia said.

This after Osmeña said the structural steel beams used for the CICC were second-hand and left over from the South Road Properties (SRP).

“The dear old man, in the sunset years of his life, has somehow managed to, time and again, provide us Cebuanos with comic relief,” Garcia said.

Garcia is questioning how Osmeña got the idea that the steel came from the SRP when it is a 295-hectare reclamation project.

The CICC is the main venue of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit in December and finishing it on time is a challenge for those behind the project.

In an earlier interview, CICC architect Manuel Guanzon again assured the public that the project will be done on time.

He also said the steel is all brand new and that there is no question on the integrity of the facility, which could cost more than P450 million.

Garcia said there is no amount of words that can convince the cynics when it comes to the CICC at the Mandaue Reclamation Area.

“Ang ako na lang, watch us and if you’re a true Cebuano, pray for those of us who are working very hard to make Cebu proud,” Garcia said.

So far, the CICC is more than 65 percent complete.

Site development is also simultaneously undertaken.

CICC is expected to be finished by Nov. 15, less than a month before the summit. (MBG)
