4 more teams join

The number of teams competing in the second Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Cup Volleyball Tournament for Women is expected to swell as more teams signed up for the province-wide tournament.

As of yesterday, four more municipalities, which were not participants last year, have confirmed their participation for this year.

The municipalities of Dalaguete, Compostela, Tuburan and Tabogon will be fielding a team in the tourney. They will be classified into clusters according to their geographic locations. Winners in every cluster will advance to the next round.

"As early as now, 34 towns have confirmed their participation. We expect more teams calling to confirm in the coming days," Judith Bonita of Capitol said.

Increase

Last year, only 20 teams made it to the general assembly, but during the opening day, the number increased to 40 participating teams.

"We expect more than 40 teams to compete this year," Bonita Tournament organizers Cebu Volleyball Association, however, will fall short of its target to get all 52 towns to join, as Malabuyoc and Tabuelan already turned down the invitation.

Technical committee head Nona Catipay is still hopeful that they could tap a team from the opposition town of Bogo.

Catipay said she and a few staff visited all offices of municipal mayors to discuss the event. Bogo, however, has yet to respond to their invitation.

The tournament stakes a P100,000 top purse to the over-all winner with the runner up getting P50,000. Cluster winners will still be receiving P20,000, while runners up take home P10,000. There will also be special awards for the Best libero, spiker, server, blocker, tosser and most valuable player.

The general assembly for all participating teams is slated tomorrow. (MCB)
