Aroy stops Veronque in 1st round of grudge tiff
By Jade S. Violeta

Alex Aroy raised the Maasin City banner high the other day after scoring a first round technical knockout win over arch enemy Noel Veronque in front of over 6,000 spectators at the Maasin City gym.

Fighting before his compatriots, Aroy connected with a heavy blow to Veronque’s body, sending him to the canvass in one minute and 30 seconds of the opening round in their 10-round match.

Aroy, who was held to a second round technical draw by Veronque on Nov. 25 last year, started aggressively as he landed several solid blows to the face and body of Veronque, who was forced to run to his corner.

Veronque seemed to have recovered quickly from the blow, as he again faced Aroy for a slugfest, but Aroy's powerful right straight poured cold water on Veronque's heated campaign.

Redemption

The win also redeemed Aroy in front of his hometown crowd after his earlier match with Veronque had to be stopped. Aroy was declared by ringside physician unfit to continue due a nasty cut above his left eye inflicted by an accidental head-butt.
The stoppage happened in the second round, thus, the technical draw.

Aroy's victory raised the hopes of his fellow Maasinhons of one day seeing a national if not a world champion among the city's professional fighters.

Maasin City Vice Mayor Maloney Samaco, in an earlier interview, revealed that they are grooming Aroy to become RP champion, at least. Aroy is the Philippine Boxing Federation ranked No.3 minimumweight contender.

Amateurs

"Aside from the professional boxers, sige pud mi og develop og mga amateur boxers unya pag-abot nila og 18 years old or above, amo na sila himoon og professional boxers through Wakee Salud," he said.

The Aroy-Veronque fight was the main event of Salud’s promotion “The Rematch,” which was held with the support of the Maasin City Government.
