Cesafi board blocks semis switch plan By Jaime A. FriasII Sun.Star Correspondent
The board members of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) junked last Wednesday the suggestion to change the semifinal format of the basketball games.
"It was a simple discussion, though. There were pros and cons, but the board members decided that the old format must be followed," Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy told Sun.Star Cebu.
Tiukinhoy announced this during the weekend that the semifinals format should be revised. Instead of the top two teams in the highschool and college men's divisions having twice-to-beat advantages, semifinalists will go for best-of-three matches. Head coach Raul Latonio Sr. of the University of Southern Philippines (USP) Panthers disagreed with the commissioner's proposal to revise the old format when the elimination round is almost done.
Start, not end
"We don't agree with that, especially when it's in the middle of the tournament. Revisions should be done before the opening of the tournament," Latonio said, following the Panthers' 65-80 loss to the University of Visayas Green Lancers, which completed all their six outings with a 6-0 win-loss card in the elimination round.
The Panthers are now toting a 3-2 win-loss card and is in second place, while the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars and the University of San Carlos Warriors, which upset the University of Cebu Webmasters last Saturday, are tied at the third and fourth places with 2-2 win-loss slates.
Old format
“Of course we go for the old format. If we win against CIT this Saturday and land number two, we will enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage in the semis while we can beat our foe in the semis once," Latonio said.
Latonio said USP will still write an appeal not to push through with the sudden revisions of the semifinal format, despite the board’s decision.
In case it ties at 4-2 with the winner of the Warriors and the Jaguars game next week, the Panthers will take the second spot outright through the winner-over-the-other rule.
Since the board has come up to their decision, Tiukinhoy said the board members might as well consider the idea next year.
