Aboitiz execs share company strategies with 85 students

Believing in the role of the youth in the future development of the country, Cebu-grown Aboitiz group of companies has gathered 85 college students from seven colleges and universities in Cebu to share secrets that raised the company from its humble beginnings to becoming one of the largest conglomerates in the country.

“I challenge you today to step out of that collegiate mindset and look into the future,” said Aboitiz and Co. president Jon Ramon Aboitiz. “We want this two-day summit to ignite your desire to become future leaders in business or whatever career you will eventually choose. Or if that desire is already there, we want this event to further fuel that desire.”

The Aboitiz group hosted the 1st Future Business Leaders’ Summit, which aims to provide participants a picture of the corporate world and hone their skills in business. The summit involves workshops on selected case studies.

Future

In his speech at the opening of the summit at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino yesterday, Aboitiz said the country’s future is “in the hands of today’s youth.”

Jon Ramon led a roster of 11 executives of the Aboitiz group who talked about about the company’s businesses and corporate strategies.

Four members of the fifth generation Aboitizes also joined the delegates to learn from their seniors.

Delegates

Summit delegates were chosen out of 108 applicants who underwent a screening process that included a panel interview by Aboitiz managers and a written essay.

In an interview, Aboitiz said the company plans to make the activity an annual event and may expand the selection of delegates to other regions in the Visayas and Mindanao.

He said the Aboitiz group wants to inspire the youth by telling them how the young Don Ramon Aboitiz, who started out as a “bodegero” (warehouseman) grew the company into what it is now—earning P30 billion.

“Aboitiz and Co. has since grown bigger and stronger while keeping its roots in Cebu,” he added.

“By sharing our history, our trials and triumphs as a company, and the valuable business lessons we have learned, we hope to inspire you to really want to make a difference…and work toward your own success in the future,” Jon Ramon told delegates at the summit. (JBN)
