2,500 runners join race for a cause

Registration for the 1st University Run-Run for Sight ended on a positive note yesterday.

An unexpected field of runners signed up to compete in the inaugural race that kicks of in front of the Cebu Doctor's University tomorrow.

Dr. Potenciano “Yong” Larrazabal III, the brains behind this race, and Joel Baring of Sports and Fitness Enthusiasts (Safe) expected to draw a mere 1,500 racers, but as of last count yesterday afternoon, the number already reached 2,500.

The race setup mimics the International Run for a Cause, a benefit activity that Larrazabal took part in San Francisco.

Proceeds

The proceeds of 1st University Run-Run for Sight will go to Cebu City cataract foundation and other service facilities. The cause is close to Larrazabal's heart being a specialist in Ophthalmology and Refractive Surgery.

Special awards

The 10-kilometer event is divided into Men's and Women's Open divisions, Doctors, Executives and Cebu Doctor's University employees.

The 5k fun run on the other hand, is open to student and parent-students.

Special prizes will also given to the biggest delegation, which Timex Runners Club is bent on winning after it registered 190 runners for the event.

There will also be prizes for the liveliest contingent and for the racer with the wackiest getup. (MCB)
