Lack of sanitation facilities can hamper Cebu tourism

Talk on toilets may seem disagreeable to some but it is a basic necessity, particularly where tourism is concerned.

This, as stakeholders in Cebu’s tourism industry identified the lack of decent toilets in the province as a “major” concern.

Aside from solving the toilet shortage, Cebu’s tourism industry stakeholders are also contemplating on hiring a professional marketing team to promote Cebu to the rest of the world.

“We need one that transcends politics,” said Cebu Visitors and Conventions Bureau executive director Mila Espina.

During a meeting among industry stakeholders at the Parklane International Hotel, former Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Anastacio Montuerto Jr. said the lack of presentable toilets from the north to the southern part of Cebu is a confirmation that Cebu still lacks tourism infrastructure.

“Our toilets, even at the airport (Mactan-Cebu International Airport) still (fall below) standard. Toilets at the airport are important because they create the first impression,” he said.

In the same event, Department of Tourism (DOT) 7 Director Aurora Patria Roa said the DOT had volunteered to spend for the construction of toilets in strategic municipalities all over the province after it discovered the lack of toilets for tourists on a long-trip.

“We volunteered to build the toilets even in Siquijor and Oriental Negros but unfortunately, the mayors of these municipalities would not give us the lot to construct the toilets,” she said.

Roa has expressed gratitude to the Cebu Provincial Government for recently volunteering to build the needed toilets from its own budget.

“With the governor at the helm, I’m sure the mayors could not say no anymore,” she said. (JBN)
