Pilipinas Basketball elects Atienza as head By Frank C. Calapre Sun.Star Correspondent
MANILA—barely a week before the FIBA Congress, the Philippine Olympic Committee-backed Pilipinas Basketball yesterday elected NCAA Mancom head Bernie Atienza as its founding president in a formal election held in Makati City.
Atienza of the College of St. Benilde was chosen by the 25-man board unopossed to serve the newly formed basketball body for at least two years. "Our next move is to appeal before the FIBA executive board to recognize the POC-recognized organization as the basketball body for the Philippines," Atienza said after the election of officers at the Rockwell Club.
Also elected were Jose "Jun-Jun" Capistrano of the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) as vice-president, while Mikee Romero of the Philippine Basketball League as tresurer.
Melvin Mendoza of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) was also tasked as corporate secretary, with Tommy Ong of the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) as assistant treasurer.
Courtesy call
The new set of officers including PBA commissioner Noli Eala and PBL commissioner Chino Trinidad will pay a courtesy call to POC president Jose "Peping" Cojuangco at his Dasmariñas Village residence at 9 a.m. today.
Atienza, said Pilipinas Basketball was given at least 30 minutes to present its side before the Federation International des Basketball (Fiba) executive committee last July 27 in Saitama, Japan.
The PBA is allocated six seats, which will be represented by Ricky Vargas, Tony Chua, Ely Capacio, Buddy Encarnado, Joaqui Trillo and Robert Non. The three seats for the PBL is represented by Chito Loyzaga, Gil Angeles and Mike Romero of Harbour Center.
Life goes on
"Whatever the decision of the Fiba, life goes on with Pilipinas Basketball. We will continue because we have POC recognition. So we continue with our plans and programs," added Atienza, the management committee chairman of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
Aside from the PBL and the PBA, the NCAA and the UAAP have been allocated three seats each in the board, while the remaining 10 seats is given to the representitaves of Northern Luzon, Southern Luzon, Central Visayas, Bicol, Eastern Visayas, Western Visayas, Central Mindanao, Western Mindanao and Northern Mindanao.
Two sectoral representatives are also allocated for the women's sector as well as for the youth group.
The election was also attended by Philippines Basketball Federation president Moying Martelno, former PBA commissioner Jun Bernardino and former BAP secretary general Nick Jorge.
