CV official considers ‘adoption’ to make cops’ stay comfortable

The Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 plans an “adopt-a-police” program to make the stay of visiting PNP personnel in Cebu more comfortable.

PRO 7 Director Silverio Alarcio Jr. raised the idea during yesterday’s weekly Kapihan sa PIA (Philippine Information Agency) forum at the Camp Sergio Osmeña Sr.

The program is to benefit more than 700 police personnel from Mindanao, who are staying in different terminals or sports complexes in parts of Metro Cebu. Some make do with flattened cardboard boxes and woven mats for beds.

Local government units have vowed to help the policemen.

The police operatives arrived in Cebu early this month and will help secure the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit this December.

As of yesterday, 743 have arrived in Cebu. They were distributed to the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), the Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO), the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) and the Lapu-Lapu City Police Station.

Alarcio said 100 more police operatives will arrive today. More will arrive in the last week of September and first week of November.

The PRO 7 expects 3,000 police in all.

Alarcio said PRO 7 will make the guidelines on how a policeman or woman will be adopted and sheltered by sponsors.

Policewomen are a priority in the program, Alarcio said.

During the forum, Senior Supt. Eduardo Catabas, MCPO chief expressed his reservation on the program.

He said the police might be late in reporting for the head count of personnel early in the day.

But Alarcio said distance will be a consideration in the choice of potential foster homes.

Alarcio said that the foster home should not be more than one kilometer from the policeman’s assignment.

CCPO Director Vicente Loot said he is willing to lend his space in PC Hills, Lahug for some female police personnel.

Alarcio said the visiting police have been told to get used to simple living while in Cebu. (JST)
