Editorials: Mary Ann Castro’s troubles

For the nth time, Assistant City Prosecutor Mary Ann Castro is in the limelight for the wrong reason, fending off claims she meddled in the affairs of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) 7.

The word “meddling” is, of course, a euphemism considering what is on the mind of a public familiar with the controversies Castro has been embroiled in.

As expected, she has denied the allegations hurled her way and seems determined to come out unscathed after the investigation ordered by Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez is completed.

One can ask, though, whether that would matter now as far as improving the prosecutor’s image considering the repetitive surfacing of questions on her integrity.

Misunderstood?

Indeed, it is tempting to believe Castro may just have been misunderstood and that she may just be a good person that, unfortunately, is prone to making more enemies than friends on the job.

One can also argue on the point that despite the issues she has faced, Castro has not been found guilty of anything that would have resulted in her being kicked out of the service pronto.

But others can brush aside that argument, too, by noting that she may just have been too wily or, as some people have been claiming, knows how to use her connections well.

Consider also her having been transferred from one position to the other, which can be construed that her higher-ups have either lost confidence in her integrity or are looking for jobs that can be implemented with lesser chances of her being sucked anew into controversies.

As for the latter reason, that apparently did not work out again, probably to Gonzalez chagrin, at the BI 7 when Castro was detailed there.

Which can lead one to ask whether the subsequent pulling out of Castro from the BI 7 and her return to the Cebu City Prosecutors Office would make a difference this time, considering that her relationship with some of her colleagues there has been strained.

Where to?

So where will all of these end for Castro?

If she is merely misunderstood, then she should undergo some soul searching, find out the reasons why controversies are hounding her and effect the needed changes, be it in the way she is handling her job or in her lifestyle.

But if she really did the things some people are accusing her, then the accusers must find ways to make their charges stick so she will no longer be able to jump into the next controversy.
