Castañares, Abapo to fight in Australia

Former World Boxing Foundation super-lightweight champion Dindo Castañares and RP jr. welterweight titlist Bart Abapo along with Pedro Malco will fly for Australia Friday for their scheduled fight on Sept.8 in Campbelltown Catholic Club in Sydney Australia.

Castañares will headline the RP vs. Australia match, which is promoted by Jeff Fenech, against an undefeated Daniel Geale for 10 rounds.

Knowledge

Castañares (16-4-2, 12 KOs), the former WBF 140-lb. title holder, has already acquired boxing license from the Games and Amusement Board will need all boxing knowledge to beat Geale who holds a 13-0 record with 11 KOs.

The fight is also at the super-welterweight (154lb.) division, 14 more pounds from his usual fighting weight.

“This would be the first and last time I would fight for that weight limit. I just agreed to fight for this weight because I am still out-of-shape, despite having a month-long training for this fight,” said Castañares during the press conference held at Baseline Restaurant last Tuesday evening.

However, beating Geale is not impossible, since the 2004 Commonwealth Games gold medalist has fought and was knocked down twice by Filipino fighter Nonoy Gonzales. Gonzales lost twice to Castañares–– the first was by a knockout and the second was by decision.

Reputation

According to his new manager Dido Bohol, even if Castañares is making his first appearance in Australia, he has a good reputation as a former WBF jr. welterweight champion. WBF is based in Australia.

Meanwhile, Abapo who will be making his second appearance in Australia and will fight Castañares’ successor to the WBF belt Johnny Cotterill Jr. for six rounds.

Cotterill has already defeated two of Bohol’s boxers Rolando Gerongco (by disqualification) and Robert Oyan (by split decision). Cotterill holds an 18-3, win-loss card with 11 KOs. (RCM)
