Estenzo gets seat in new cage body

MANILA - Lawyer Baldomero Estenzo of the University of Cebu has been strongly nominated as Central Visayas’ representative to the Philippine Olympic Committee-recognized Pilipinas Basketball.

“He has been highly recommended by the stakeholders in Cebu,” said the league’s president-elect, Bernie Atienza of the College of St. Benilde, in an interview after the election of officers at the Rockwell Club in Makati City the other day.

Cebu produced athletes like Manny Paner, Ernesto Estrada, Elmer Cabahug, Al Solis, Ramon Fernandez and Don-Don Hontiveros, among others.

Slots

Atienza, the current management committee chairman of the 2006 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), said nine of the 25 seats in the board of the Pilipinas Basketball have been allotted to the regions.

They include Central, Eastern and Western Visayas, Southern and Northern Luzon, the Bicol Region, and Central, Northern and Western Mindanao.

The youth sector, meanwhile, has one seat, Atienza said.

The PBA has six slots, to be assumed by Ricky Vargas, Tony Chua, Ely Capacio, Buddy Encarnado, Joaquin Trillo and Robert Non.

The PBL, meanwhile, has three slots filled in by Chito Loyzaga, Gil Angeles and Mike Romero.

Both the NCAA and the UAAP, have been given three seats each.

Elected

The other elected officials of the Pilipinas Basketball include Jose “Jun-Jun” Capistrano of the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) as vice-president.

Mikee Romero, who owns the Harbour Center team in the Philippine Basketball League, got chosen as treasurer while Melvin Mendoza of the Philippine Basketball Association got voted as corporate secretary.

Tommy Ong of the Philippine Basketball League, for his part, got installed as assistant treasurer.

Philippines Basketball Federation president Moying Martelno, former PBA commissioner Jun Bernardino and former BAP secretary-general Nick Jorge have expressed their full support to the new organization. (FCC)
