RP bets bury foes 9-0 in World Cup of Pool By Mike Limpag Sun.Star Staff Reporter
Team Philippines showed why it is the top bet in the World Cup of Pool by demolishing Malta, 9-0, in the first round yesterday at the Newport Center in Wales.
Francisco Bustamante and Efren Reyes pounced on the errors of Tony Drago and Alex Borg to carve out the day's most lopsided win in 50 minutes.
"(It's) hard to believe but me and Efren never practiced in the Philippines, but we know what's going on and understand each other on the table," Bustamante said in a report posted at the event's official website.
Despite the whitewash, Drago, a former World Pool Masters champion, was all praises for the Pinoy legends.
"These guys are so good and we have just played two of the greatest players of all time. There were a couple of lucky shots, but they are legends in the game and sometimes I wonder if they played for it (the shot) or not," said Drago.
The Philippines lost the lag but quickly got on the table in the first rack after Borg scratched on the one.
Another foul in the third rack by Drago allowed the Philippines to post a 3-0 lead, before padding it to 8-0. Malta had its last shot in the ninth rack with Drago scratching off the break, giving an open table for the Philippines.
"We came to here to try and win and we aren't disappointed to lose because I believe they're the best team here but nobody wants to lose 9-0," said Drago, who according to the report, showed good humor as he pretended to strangle Reyes after the Magician produced another perfect shot.
Meanwhile, in other results, England's “B” team, defeated Korea, 9-6, Canada defeated Thailand, 9-5, Malaysia defeated Qatar, 9-3, the Czechs defeated Poland, 9-6, while another heavily favored team, Taiwan, defeated India, 9-6.
