Serna: Dream Academy begins
By Roger Serna

“Siloy nga mananoy makahupay sa kakapoy…” Thus goes the jingle of the Siloy festival of the southeastern town of Alcoy.

The said festival is one of the existing festivals around the province of Cebu, and one of the 18 that has a jingle to its credit.

Two weeks ago, the Dinagat festival of Cordova, which has been sidelined for one outing in favor of the Bakasi festival has been revived with the town’s first lady, Tina Sitoy herself joining in one of the groups during the showdown at the municipal gym.

This year’s edition marks the ‘marriage’ of the two festivals and has thus been tagged as the Dinagat (Bakasi) festival.

Tomorrow, the Siloy festival will be staged at the main thoroughfares of Alcoy. For those who have no idea as to the origin of the festival, the Siloy festival celebrates the presence of the endangered and endemic bird, the Black Shama or the siloy, which makes the Nog-as forest of Alcoy as its favorite abode.

More towns are coming up with their own festivals and those which already have are exerting efforts to come up with their respective jingles. Before the year ends, at least three or four towns (or even more, who knows?) will be giving birth to their own festivals that speak of their own culture, heritage, people and place.

The more, the merrier, as the saying goes.

Also tomorrow, Cebuana songbird Sheryn Regis (oh, yes, she’s the Crystal Voice of Asia, I almost forgot) will be sharing her gift of song that made her a household name nationwide in the northern town of Daanbantayan.

That is, if the plans did not miscarry (these were hatched during the concert that Sheryn had in the southern town of Sibonga, a few days before the town’s annual fiesta and shortly before I lost my previous cellphone to a snatcher).

The loss of my cellphone also cut off the communication lines between the organizers and the artist’s party. Sad.

Another big event in the entertainment field will be unfolding right in front of the Cebu provincial Capitol tomorrow starring at 9:30 p.m. The said event is the launching of the newest program of ABS-CBN which is the widely-publicized and much-awaited Pinoy Dream Academy.

If my memory serves me right, 36 hopefuls from all over the country will be vying for the 16 slots. Unlike that of Pinoy Big Brother where the participants were called housemates, here in the Pinoy Dream Academy they will be referred to with a different tag (scholars, I suppose).

While the other provinces were lucky enough to come up with one hopeful, Cebu has so far produced six future showbiz stalwarts. Hopefully, these six (or at least majority of them) will be lucky enough to be included in the final 16.

In a phone conversation with ABS-CBN Cebu’s Trixie L. Tolentino, she narrated that director Laurenti Dyogi has since dreamed of holding a big event here in Cebu and the PDA launching happened to be it.

As to the choice of location, the Capitol was just one of the many sites that had been considered. When the team passed by the imposing and historical building, director Dyogi immediately made up his mind and thus dropped the other considered sites.

Once again, just like during the selection and coronation night of the Miss Asia-Pacific sometime in the nineties, the majestic provincial Capitol will once again be an impressive backdrop to the unfolding of the big event.

Be part of the excitement and be proud to be a Cebuano.

Just a few minutes back before yours truly encoded this column, a text message from Gaisano Main informed this columnist that a copy of FHM Magazine where young star and recent Cebu visitor Valerie Concepcion appears on the cover awaited me at the desk of Rosemarie Gaisano’s sidekick, Julian ‘Japan’ Cañete , courtesy of the young star herself.

If you think Valerie sent the magazine because we asked for it, you’re wrong. It was voluntary on her part.

Such thoughtfulness and generosity are among the many reasons why Valerie is a favorite of Ms. Gaisano in the many events the chain of department store holds. If my memory serves me right, the recent visit of Valerie to grace the birthday party of Alex Gaisano a couple of weeks ago was the young actress’ third or fourth.

More power, Val! Thank you, too!
