By Jade S. Violeta
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

Organizers of the Milo Marathon Cebu elimination are on course to surpass last year’s record crowd of 19,510 when the 2006 edition of the race blast off on Aug. 27 in front of the Cebu Normal University along Osmeña Blvd.

This year’s target? 20,500 runners. Making the entire boulevard a sea of runners in green.

This was announced by Cebu organizer and Cebu City Sports Center manager Ricky Ballesteros during the Scoop-Cebu forum at Baseline Restaurant.

According to Ballesteros, last year’s number has already been surpassed as they have already registered 19,778 runners.

Aside from the 21k competition, there will also be side events to be featured and special prizes to be given away on race day.

The side events are the Inter-Club and Inter-School Taebo, Aerobics and Cheer Dance competitions, while they will also hand out a special award to the biggest delegation. They will also hand out raffle prizes.

The 21k course will traverse the major thoroughfares of the city along with the 3k and 5k races.

Private First Class Rogelio Reli of the Philippine Army is again expected to defend his crown successfully, especially after winning the Men’s Open title of the 1st University Run-Run for Sight 10k race last week.

However, Women’s division defending champion, Christy Sevilleno, is expected to meet stiff competition based last week’s competition.

During the 1st University Run-Run for Sight 10k race, Sevilleno only managed to snare third.

On the other hand, expected to give Reli a run for his money are USP’s Mendel Lopez, Riez Enriquez, Lorenzo Enriquez and University of San Jose-Recoletos’ Gilbert Luterte, who made up the top five runners last week.

The Men’s and Women’s division champions in the Cebu leg will pocket P10,000 each, aside from the chance of earning a place for the National Finals in Manila, which dangles a total cash prize of P5.2 million.
