Sayson: A shoulder to cry on
By Homer Sayson

CHICAGO - Not that we demanded it or anything, but Antonio L. Aldeguer e-mailed an explanation on why I and the rest of my sportswriting brethren were not given the heads up on Rey Bautista's injury, a mild disappointment that triggered yesterday's column, "Sitting on the Bautista story."

"I read your column today and I am really sorry that we did not inform you or any member of the media regarding the injury of BoomBoom because we felt that we first had to get the go signal from Golden Boy Promotions," ALA wrote.

"We could not just release any news on Boom-Boom's injury without getting the consent and permission of GBP. We wanted them to make the announcement, but they decided to let us do the task and it was only then that we made the announcement. Hope you understand."

I absolutely, positively understand. That being said, let me inform the uninitiated that Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar Dela Hoya' outfit, owns the promotional rights to Boom-Boom's fights. Out of simple courtesy, the ALA stable had to consult with GBP regarding any news or development concerning the Candijay, Bohol ring star.

Meanwhile, here's the skinny on Boom-Boom's now infamous shoulder.

As relayed by trainer Edito Villamor from Los Angeles, Boom-Boom was "examined and treated by" Dr. Kee Wong of the Orthopedic Medical Group and Athletic Rehabilitation Center Inc. A cast has been placed on Bautista's shoulder and the entire healing process will devour at least six weeks.

Naturally, Boom-Boom is saddened by his second unexpected trip to the injured list. He feels like ramming into a brick wall right now, or punching someone in the nose.

Boom-Boom was supposed to display his wares in the undercard of the Pacquiao-Larios tiff last June at the Araneta Coliseum. But the mighty Boholano was downed by the flu. And now this: "a complete fracture involving the proximal third of the right clavicle, resulting in superior angulation of a mild degree."

"He is so eager to fight," said Freddie Roach of his prized pug. But the inability to whack some contender and rise further in the world rankings isn't the only factor inducing Bautista's depression.

There's also the color of money.

Depending on which newspaper or website you're reading, Bautista's lost purses in the two fights he has been forced to back out from teeter between one to P1.5 million. That's a lot of serious dough, cash that would have gone a long way to a 20-year-old kid who's financing the studies of his three siblings.

But if Boom-Boom needs a shoulder to cry on, he quickly found one, as Oscar Dela Hoya encouraged the Boholano to hold his head high and hope for better things to come.

"Bautista is still young and he still has a long way to go. Golden Boy Promotions is lining up a couple of fights for him after he gets well," Dela Hoya said yesterday when Bautista paid him a visit alongside Villamor.

Bautista is scheduled to return to Cebu this Monday. His handlers believe that while Boom-Boom's shoulder aches and his heart breaks, some home cooking will do a lot of good.

After all, there is no place like home.

P.S. Having looked forward to Boom-Boom's Sept. 16 fight for some time now, I already had booked a plane ticket and hotel reservation for Las Vegas. I may still go for the Barrera-Juarez rematch, but without Boom-Boom, there would be so little life to my coverage.
