Siso kids, Lagman face world netters By Marian C. Baring Sun.Star Correspondent
The 40th International Children’s Games (ICG) will hold its opening ceremonies this afternoon at the Bangkok Youth Center in Thailand.
This morning, however, tennis players will already see action at the Vatchirabenjathat Sports Center Tennis Court.
The opening ceremonies for the five-day meet will be graced by Thailand's princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, herself a national badminton player. Also present in the program is Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin, who heads the organizing committee for the ICG with ICG president Torsten Rasch.
Thailand's hosting of the ICG is in line with the country's yearlong celebration of the 60th anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's ascent to the throne.
Scope
The ICG, considered the world's largest multi-sport youth games, is sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee and is a competition that is arranged for students, since its scope is for athletes ages 12-15 years old.
This year, Cebu takes part in the competitions for the third straight time. The athletes compete in four of the 12 events—dancesport, lawn tennis, table tennis and swimming.
This morning, top Cebuano netters Sally Mae and Bernardine "Niño" Siso and Jessica Lagman will be pitting their skills against other players from 83 cities from 38 countries.
High hopes are pinned on the Sisos, having been familiar fixtures in a bunch of national competitions, since last year. The siblings are national top-ranked players in their age divisions here. Also, the have a number of titles of international competitions tucked under their belts.
Lagman on the other hand, is on her first international exposure, but a lot is also expected of her as she comes from a brood of national standouts, including brother Jacob Lagman, who earned a grandslam in an international tennis circuit in Malaysia last December.
Tomorrow’s action
The other members of the delegation will see action tomorrow.
Expected to rake in awards are dancesport representatives Inoue Roi C. Rendon and partner Christy Kim P. Velez and the pair of Jefferson Z. Pimentel and Daine Xylenne L. Balili. Dancesport will be held at the Indoor Stadium in Bangkok.
Competing in Table Tennis at the Training Center for Competitions are Gillian Krystle M. Ypil and Krizia Kim D. Young.
Five tankers on the other hand, will banner the Cebuanos banner in the medal-rich swimming event at the Bangkok Youth Center. They are Patricia R. Solon, John Sebastian R. Solon, Josemari B. Lozano, Loren Dale B. Echavez and Kirstenyl L. Amante.
