Atillo tops Cepca thematic tourney

Joe Atillo surprised the rest of the field to top the Monthly Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association Thematic Chess Tournament last Sunday at the Bibo Chess Club.

Atillo clinched the crown at the expense of Mandy Baria, who was playing solidly, in the d3 Irregular Opening encounter in the final round to tally 4.5 points in the tournament.

Final round

Defending champion Miguel Banibane was already out of contention for the first prize, even before the final round, and settled for second prize.

On the other hand, Maggi Dionson, who needed a win in the final round to take first prize, faltered after losing to Mer Fernandez to settle for third.

Fernandez finished fourth, while 2006 Shell National Youth Chess Kiddy finalist Yves Fiel took fifth place.

Some 22 participants played in the event, which used the Larsen opening, e4-e5 encounter, Saragosa Opening, d4-d5 opening, d4-d5 encounter and d3 Irregular opening.

In a separate tournament over the weekend, Gilberto Baylosis ruled the 1st Baptist Church tilt.

Baylosis defeated Paul Luarez to finish with nine points in the single round robin tournament.

Ben Balansag and Gerald Coson finished second and third, respectively, after finishing with identical seven points apiece. Balansag took outright second after the winner-over-the other rule. (JAF)
