Reyes, Bustamante to shoot for $500T top prize in Las Vegas

After conquering the World Cup of Pool in Wales, Francisco Bustamante and Efren Reyes have set their eyes on the International Pool Tour's World 8-Ball Championships in Las Vegas Nevada on Sept. 2-10.

The eight-day event offers a total of $3,000,000 prizes and hands out the biggest top purse in pool—$500,000 or almost P26 million—to the champion.

Reyes, who just celebrated his 52nd birthday last Saturday, and Bustamante are fresh from their 13-5 conquest of the US in the World Cup of Pool finals, earning $60,000 between them.

The duo were most impressive in the first round, as they routed Malta, 9-0, registering the most lopsided score of the event, which drew some of the top 64 players in the world.

Richest purse

This time, they will be playing for themselves for pool's richest purse.

The previous top purse was $350,000 during IPT's North American 8-Ball Open last month, won by Thorsten Hohman. Reyes finished fourth in that event, with another Pinoy, Dennis Orcullo, third and Marlon Manalo, second.

Orcullo, Manalo are also expected to join the World 8-Ball Championship.

The Championships will have six rounds, with the players spread into groups of six. After each round, the bottom three of each group will be eliminated, while the top three moves on until only six are left in the final day.

Still, those who are eliminated will not be fretting. Those who go out in the first day will go home with $5,000, while those who make it to the next round will earn $7,000.

Other Pinoys who are expected to join the event are Gandy Valle, Santos Sambajon, Ronato Alcano, Warren Kiamco and Alex Pagulayan. (ML)
