Toral: Radio lives on
By Jannette Toral
Digital Filipino

While preparing for the 12th episode of the DigitalFilipino.com Podcast, I got the chance to talk to Wilson Chua of eRadioPortal.com. Wilson has a small information technology company based in Dagupan City.

The idea of putting up eRadioPortal.com started with his desire to listen to a jazz radio station, which is not available in their city and when Microsoft Windows Media Services became available.

Today, eRadioPortal.com hosts numerous radio programs from all over the Philippines, being streamed to the rest of the world.

Wilson cited several advantages why radio stations should consider going online. Foremost is being able to reach out to the rest of the world where there’s nearly eight million diaspora and overseas workers.

As majority of listeners are based outside the country, Wilson often receives emails of appreciation for the service they provide that made home much more closer to them.

In another aspect, prime time programming no longer exists as time boundaries have shattered. Therefore, advertisers need to appreciate or recognize the value of this medium since commercials can also be listened to abroad.

There’s no wonder why our diaspora are as much attuned and sensitive to the situation of the country today. Online radio has empowered them to listen to the issues first hand and interact in discussions.

This only proves the usefulness of the Internet, whose level of use and purpose are dependent on each one of us.

It is great to see technology finally catching up with what you want to do. In the 2000, I registered the domain name eFilipino.org and use it as a medium to offer free email domain services. I used Everyone.net for that purpose.

Although I did not market it, the site now has more than 1,500 users.

However, disk space is only limited to 25 MB per user.

Lately, Google.com started offering applications to website owners where people like me can offer Google’s various online services using my own brand. This includes services like the 2GB per user Gmail, Calendar, Google Talk, among others.

I’ll share my eFilipino migration to this platform next week.

7th anniversary. My website, DigitalFilipino.com, will be celebrating its seventh year on Sept. 20 at the Rajah Park Hotel in Cebu City. We are inviting SMEs and enterprises to come as we are holding a half-day One Internet Day forum with the theme e-Commerce Build-Up for SMEs. Topics vary from e-commerce policy development, status of online payment in the country, and new business opportunities.

Mike Jurado of Prime Software (http://www.primesoft.ph) will also show their newest made-in-Cebu software package. Another thing to watch out for as well is the re-launching of CyberPromdi, Cebu’s pioneer Internet advocacy group.

The full program can be found at http://philippineinternetreview.blogspot.com.

WEB AWARDS. Today is the last day to register and pay the entry fee for the Philippine Web Awards (http://www.philippinewebawards.com).

As I learned from Erick Kalugdan of Load.com.ph, one should not hesitate to join awards search. Whether you win or lose, the value of the publicity is beyond comparison. With that, I’m encouraging site owners to join and promote your website.
