Speak out: Silliman University By Nonoy Castillon
In 1898, Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman of Cohoes, New York, walked into the Manhattan office of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church and offered $10,000 to start an industrial school for Filipino boys.
Three years later and through the efforts of a missionary, Dr. David Sutherland Hibbard and his wife Laura, the promise was fulfilled. On Aug. 28, 1901, Silliman Institute in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental opened with 15 local young boys.
This week, Silliman University celebrates its 105th founding anniversary. It continues to blaze the trail, inspired by its motto, "Via, Veritas, Vita" (the Way, the Truth and the Life).
