Pinoy pair advances in Singapore badminton

SINGAPORE —The pair of Therine Chan and Arolas Amahit Jr. beat their Singaporean rivals to advance in the next round of the Cheers Singapore Satellite at Toa Payou Sports Hall here.

Chan, a La Salle mainstay, and Amahit got off to an impressive start before holding back their rivals late rally to post a 21-18, 21-11 victory against host Kia Hwee Taw and Noriko Goh and advanced to the second phase of the qualifying round in the mixed doubles of this tourney sanctioned by the International Badminton Federation.

"Muntik na tayong mabokya. Talagang pinilit naming kahit na maingay ang crowd dahil medyo kinapos ang iba nating players. At least meron pa rin tayong chance sa mixed doubles," said national mentor Errol Chan.

Chan and Amahit will have to double their effort against Indonesian Suryatama Yonathan and Nadya Melati in the next round today.

The other members of the Philippine team backed by Yonex Sunrise were not as lucky as Chan and Amahit as they fell one after the other in a closely match-up witnessed by throng of Filipino Overseas Workers.

Support

"Sobra ang suporta ng ating mga kababayan, kaya kahit maingay ang crowd lumalaban sila ng sigawan," said Chan, also the chairman of the Philippine Badminton Association grassroots sports development program.

Wilmer Frias and Ian Mendez failed to sustain the momentum dropping a 21-10, 21-14 defeat against the Taiwanese pair of Li Keng Ting and Shu Kum Jia in the men's doubles.

In the morning game, Frias and Mendez subdued Zhayi Yeo and Min Yung of Singapore in three-set 22-20, 18-21, 21-16.

"Kinapos. Nagkasunod-sunod pa ang turnovers kaya nahirapang makabawi sa second set," said Chan.

Faltered

The pair of Ben Jonas Garcia and junior standout Diosan Abangan also faltered, 19-21, 9-21 over Singapore's Yan Senkoj and Vanessa Neo.

Marlon Villarin and Garcia lost to Goo Rul Chen and Jefrrey Wok of Singapore in the men's doubles, 20-22, 12-21.

In the singles competition, Wilmer Frias bowed to Tokiq Rasydu of Indonesia, 13-21, 21-23; Ben Jonas Garcia dropped a 21-19, 14-21, 13-21 over Jonathan Tang of Singapore; Marlon Villarin lost to Liqun Cheng of Malaysia, 17-21, 8-21; Wally Fernandez failed against Chao Ping of Singapore, 7-21, 18-21; Mark Natividad fell over How Chew of Singapore, 5-21, 7-21; Amahit lost to Rikcy Widinato of Malaysia, 17-21, 13-21 and Abangan was beaten by Rahim Siti Mastura of Singapore, 9-21, 12-21.
