Fiel tallies perfect record in 7th Goodwin Kiddies event
Despite having two more rounds added, 13-year-old Yves Fiel still manage to remain undefeated to rule the 7th Goodwin Kiddies Active Chess Tournament at the Bibo Chess Club last Sunday.
“Parents and organizers requested to add two more rounds so as to extend more exposures for our kiddy bets,” said tournament arbiter Marvin Ruelan.
Fiel, who studies at the University of San Jose-Recoletos and a finalist to this year’s Shell National Youth Active Chess grand finals, defeated Jan Cleomar Tilus in the final round to score a perfect 7.0 points.
Final round
John Balbona, of the Colegio dela Inmaculada Concepcion, took second place with six points, after a final round win over John Hamilton Paler using the black pieces.
Balbona lost in the third round, but bounced back by sweeping his final four assignments.
Godfrey Villamor took the third spot, while Nikkie Sabiquil and Tilus took the fourth and fifth spot, respectively, as Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano finished fifth.
On the other hand, it was a disappointing end for Jabber Casan, who shared the lead with Fiel after four rounds. Casan dropped his last three matches against Fiel, Balbona and Sabiquil to finish with 4.0 points. (JAF)
