USJ-R rips UV apart, as SWU dumps UC
Michelle Simbajon slipped into the hero’s shoes as she powered the depleted yet determined University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) lady spikers to win over the University of the Visayas (UV) in straight sets last Saturday at the USC Gym.
Simbajon, USJR’s skipper, scored 15 straight points in the third set off her services, to thrash UV, 25-20, 25-22, 25-13, and open its title-retention bid on a positive note.
Simbajon is a member of the RP Youth team and played libero in the Asian Girls tournament held last year in Mandaue City.
Coming into the Cesafi season, USJ-R coach Grace Antigua wasn’t so confident as she could only field in eight players—the first six, the libero and one sub.
“We can’t really tell what the outcome will be. I only have eight players,” Antigua said the day before the match.
Not enough
However, the expertise of her wards is enough for her to be positive about their chances this year.
Antigua also acquired the services of another RP youth team mainstays Genie Sabas, the team quicker, apart from Simbajon. The rest of her team are the stalwarts that brought USJ-R the title last year—Gwendolyn Gutang (libero), Aina Laroga, Angieluv Cabiles (spikers), Sarah Miculob (quicker), and Joy Bonita. Another new recruit is Avegale Getuban.
Meanwhile, former grandslam winner Southwestern University is poised at taking back its lost glory as it defeated University of Cebu, 25-20, 25-22, 25-13.
Head coach Thelma Datig has recruited new players whom she saw playing in their towns during the inaugural Gov. Gwen Garcia Unity Cup for Women, a province-wide competition.
New faces
The new discoveries, who provide defense for SWU from the frontline, are Elizabeth Emance from Barili, Denalie Baquiro and Mary Luilyn Pacinio from Sta. Fe Bantayan. This year, the team captain responsibilities lie on Joreen Sanchez’ shoulders. Also playing for the team is national beach volley champion Maritess Natad.
In another match, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation survived University of San Carlos, 16-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-15.
This is USPF’s first win and USC’s first loss in two outings. (MCB)
