Cebu schools get help for better English lessons

Bigfoot Asia Pacific Foundation Inc. (Bigfoot) is giving out about 20,000 free accounts of its CleverCourse product to the Department of Education (DepEd) for the benefit of elementary and high school students in Cebu City and province.

CleverCourse is an online English course developed by Cleverlearn Ltd., an affiliate of Bigfoot Global Solutions Inc.

The donation is part of Bigfoot’s continuing support for English learning and information technology education advancement in the country.

Bigfoot chief executive officer Joe Mercado said “You only have to look around to see that the Philippines has become a favored destination of many multi-million-dollar business process outsourcing companies. And yet, socio-economic experts have been warning that the English proficiency of Filipino graduates, and consequently our workforce, has been deteriorating for years.”

“As our country endeavors to be globally competitive, we want to do our part by addressing this concern. English is the international language of business and it has become an indispensable tool in our continuing development,” he added.

Investment

Cleverlearn, a technology company, has invested millions of dollars to develop its own English learning system.

It tapped language experts to design and develop CleverCourse, which is currently being used by subscribers in Asia, Europe and other parts of the globe.

Each CleverCourse account in Germany is sold for 20 euros for a month’s subscription.

Qualifications

“With this program, we are sharing with the students the Cleverlearn English learning system and experience. And eventually, we hope this will help our students to attain their goal of achieving higher qualifications especially in an English-driven market,” he added.

Developed by languge experts, CleverCourse (www.clevercourse.com) features a library of English lessons online.

It offers a general English course, as well as industry-specific Business English courses, such as marketing, manufacturing, business travel, finance, customer service, information technology, human resources, and even business presentations.

“In the near future, we might be expanding the scope of this project by making CleverCourse available to all students in the country, especially in the public education system,” Mercado added.

Bigfoot Asia Foundation, which is based in Cebu City, is a nonprofit organization funded by Bigfoot Global Solutions Inc. and is dedicated to the improvement of the quality of education of children in underprivileged areas through the use of technology.
