3 more Pinoys reach round 2

Three more Filipinos advanced to the next round of the $3 million-rich World 8-Ball Championships in Reno, Nevada yesterday.

Santos Sambajon, Ramil Gallego and Canada-based Edwin Montal joined Efren Reyes, Francisco Bustamante and five other Pinoys in Round 2, after surviving the first cut, upping the total number of Pinoy cue artists to 13.

Sambajon, who is now based in the US, defeated Hiroshi Takenaka, 8-7, Leile Gay, 8-4, Bardy Gollan, 8-7 before losing to Ben Davies.

On the other hand, Gallego split his matches, defeating Toni Judet, 8-5 and Ray Martin, 8-3 and losing to Sal Butera, 5-8 and Fabio Petroni, 4-8.

Montal defeated Jayson Shaw, 8-2, Robin Dodson, 8-6 and Colin Colenso, 8-5, before losing to Karl Boyes, 4-8.

Next round

In the next round, Gallego will join Marlon Manalo and four others in Group 41, hoping to finish within the top three to advance to the Round 3.

Only Manalo and Gallego will face a fellow Pinoy in round two as the rest have been equally distributed in the 19 groups in Round 2.

Meanwhile, the volatile Earl "The Pearl" Strickland again hogged the limelight in the first round, after getting fined $1,000 for wearing improper clothes.

"It's my own fault for following the other players, because they are idiots when it comes to dressing—they are going to try to abuse the dress code. I knew that, and it's the same thing. I followed them and it's cost me a thousand dollars," Strickland told insidepoolmag.com

Strickland was his usual self in his 8-6 win over Jasmine Ouschan, the latest toast in Women's Pool.

According to insidepoolmag.com, Strickland was practicing before the match when Ouschan approached the table, and the American, gestured for her to join him in practice, but she declined.

"Oh, you don't need to practice," Strickland reportedly said.

After the win, Strickland approached Ouschan and said, "You play great...but I play better." (ML)
