Banal to train with Freddie Roach in Los Angeles

Undefeated Alex John Banal is set to leave for the US to train with Freddie Roach at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood in Los Angeles, California.

Golden Boy Promotions, which handles Banal, wants the skilled fighter to debut in the US once he reaches 18 this December.

“We will bring Banal to the US for training purposes only,” said ALA Boys promoter Sammy Gello-ani. “We wanted him to be exposed in the US, and get some good sparring sessions with other nationalities, so that he can get the feeling of how to fight against world class boxers.”

If plans push through, Banal will follow the footsteps of Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista’s handlers brought him to the Wild Card Gym to train before he got his US-mainland debut against Felix Murillo-Flores in September 2005.

Test

Banal, whom Gello-ani described as “Bautista and Gorres combined,” will have another test this Sept. 23 against Thai knockout puncher Klongchai Sor Visetkit for 10 rounds at the Island City Mall Car Park in Tagbilaran City.

The bout will be under the Czar Amonsot vs. Simson Butar Butar clash for the WBO Asia Pacific super featherweight championship.

This will be Banal’s first 10-round fight in nine professional bouts, which include eight wins with seven knockout wins and a draw.

Win streak

Klongchai (16-8, 10KOs) is on a four fight winning streak, which includes a third round knockout over Palangchai Sor Vorapin last July 27, a fourth round KO over Euchi Soonkilanoinai in Feb. 3, and a first round TKO win over the then undefeated Japanese prospect Tatsuma Ohora on Nov. 6 last year.

“We are already working on his (Banal’s) visa and probably after his fight against Visetkit, we will take him to the US for training,” said Gello-ani. (RCM)
