RP can still form Asiad team: body

The sending of a basketball team to the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar on Dec. 1 to 15 remains a possibility, Pilipinas Basketball (PB) president Bernie Atienza said.

He said the country’s participation in the basketball event of the Asiad is still an option that can be settled only once the new federation, which will replace the 60-year-old Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP), is already in place.

“It would be best for us to wait until the new federation can already take over and the country’s suspension by the Fiba is already lifted,” said Atienza during yesterday’s Philippine Sportswriters Forum at the Pantalan Restaurant in Malate, Manila.

Atienza also said the unity talks between the BAP and Philippine Olympic Committee-backed PB went through without hitches, signaling the birth of the new basketball federation.

He said the three-man panel headed by PLDT and Smart Communications chairman Manny Pangilinan has set the new federation’s National Congress on Sept. 16, by which the affiliated members will also select the 25 members of the board.

The members of the board will then choose the officials of the organization.

Atienza said the three-man panel did not encounter any objection when they started reviewing the list of affiliated members submitted by both the BAP and BP during their first meeting last Monday in Makati City. (FCC)
