IT firm offers ICT training at local school

Mandaue City will soon produce world-class information and communication technology (ICT) programmers, especially those with skills in hypertext preprocessing or PHP programming, which is now highly in demand for Internet marketing.

Mayor Thadeo Ouano has approved the proposal for the Mandaue City College to work with a Barangay Casuntingan-based information technology (IT) company to enhance the capability of its students and enable them to respond to current requirements in the application of IT in e-commerce.

Noting that Cebu lacks programmers equipped with writing comprehensive PHP scripts and other programs needed to accelerate online sales for companies using Internet marketing, Focus Interactive Outsourcing Inc. proposed to Mayor Ouano a program to train Mandaue residents.

Hard to find

“Hardly could we find programmers skilled in PHP Internet protocols,” Focus chief executive officer Andrie Udal told the mayor in a recent meeting.

Udal said his company had to hire programmers from Mindanao and relocate them with their families to Mandaue.

In anticipating its near future requirements for more PHP programmers, Udal opted to provide Cebu programmers the needed training with the collaboration of a local government unit whose leadership would support the idea.

“As we operate in Mandaue, it is logical for us to start at home,” Udal said. “We are very happy Mayor Ouano does not only welcome the idea. He wants it pursued and be institutionalized through the city college.”

Dr. Paulo Cañete, president of the Mandaue City College, also welcomed the proposal of Focus Outsourcing, according to Cerwin Eviota, Focus’ public relations consultant and government liaison officer.

Eviota said Cañete wanted PHP programming incorporated in the curriculum of IT courses and offer it as a special short-term course for ICT graduates living in Mandaue.

Study

Cañete and Udal, with Focus key project managers, are studying the proposal and have identified initial steps to realize the plan.

Udal said his company is willing to train instructors and assign its key programmers to teach at the city college at no cost to the school.

“We’ll only want the first option whether to hire the products of our efforts at the city college,” he said.

“In the long run, Mandaue City will become a good source of skilled PHP programmers,” he added.

Focus is involved in online sales acceleration and production and marketing of mobile phone content for affiliates and clients in the United States, Australia and some parts of Europe.

Since January this year, it has hired about 40 skilled PHP programmers.

With its fast-growing operations, the company needs more PHP programmers who will get the best offer in the industry based on the level of their acquired skills and experience, Udal said. (PR)
