3 Pinoys crash out of $3M pool tourney
After an impressive opening round, the Filipino onslaught in the International Pool Tour's World 8-Ball Championships faltered in the second round, with three dropping out of contention.
Still, nine Pinoys, including World Cup champions Efren "Bata" Reyes and Francisco "Django" Bustamante, are still in the hunt for the $500,000 top prize, as the field was narrowed down to 60, going into the third round.
The Filipinos who crashed out were Warren Kiamco, Marlon Manalo and Santos Sambajon. Kiamco and Sambajon each had three losses with two wins, while Manalo had four with a lone win.
Meanwhile, Danny Harriman was the buzz in yesterday's round two, as he climbed up the table for a shot.
Bustamante posted the most impressive performance among the nine remaining Filipinos, as he won all five games to top his group.
Bustamante, who is now undefeated in nine matches, defeated Carl Morris, Ben Nunan and Tang Hoa, 8-2, Hung Ming Chu, 8-5 and Nick Van den Berg, 8-7.
Lost
On the other hand, Reyes defeated Fabio Petroni, 8-6, Samuel Jones, 8-3 and top female player, Allison Fisher, 8-1 and lost to Chris Melling, 7-8, and Kim Davenport, 3-8.
"When I play the ladies ... my concentration (is) no good. She's good, but every time the balls don't go in on the break. Not only that, I don't make a ball on the break in two racks. Then every time I break, I don't get any good position," Reyes told insidepoolmag.com.
Other Pinoys who advanced are Dennis Orcullo, Jose "Amang" Parica, Antonio Lining, Alex Pagulayan, Ramil Gallego, Rodolfo Luat and 2005 Sun.Star Superbalita champion Ronato Alcano.
Round 3
In Round 3, Orcullo will play Chris Melling, Ralf Soquet, Marko Lohtander, David Matlock and Alcano. Bustamante will play Jason Kirkwood, Pagulayan, Tony Chohan and Furuta Kazuo. Luat is in Group 68 with Gabriel Owen, Neils Feijen, Larry Nevel and Josen Miller.
In a report, Harriman drew the ire of Johnny Archer yesterday after he climbed on the table to take a shot. Before he took the shot, though, Harriman, who was ahead, 7-4, consulted a referee and was told that it was allowed.
According to insidepoolmag.com Archer reportedly refused to shake Harriman's hand after he lost and was told by Harriman, "You're disrespecting me."
Archer replied, "Hey, we're in suits and ties here, and you're jumping on the table like a monkey...you're disrespecting me." (ML)
