Baby warriors march to semis
By Jade S. Violeta

The USC Baby Warriors barged into the semifinal round in the secondary division of the 6th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball season yesterday, overwhelming the CIT Wildkittens, 55-48, in their do-or-die quarterfinals match at the USC gym.

Seeing their twice-to-beat edge wane in the quarterfinals after absorbing a 53-50 debacle in their first encounter, Baby Warriors coach Roland Remedio relied on the tandem of Robert Gines Codilla and John Philip delos Santos to wreck havoc in the final half and rescue the University of San Carlos from an impending disaster.

With the victory, the Baby Warriors will now face the vaunted University of Cebu Baby Webmasters, who will be enjoying a twice-to-beat edge in their semis battle.

The lanky Codilla banged in 12 points in the second half when the Baby Warriors began to take control to finish the game with 17 markers while delos Santos scored all but two of his 11 points in the second half to help his team subdue the hard-fighting Wildkittens.

Control

The Wildkittens controlled the tempo of the game in the first half and took a slim 17-16 edge at the end of the opening period before extending this to 25-28 at the bend.

The Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) players stretched its lead further at the start of the penultimate canto, 30-25, before Codilla and delos Santos took turns burning the hoop and anchored a 16-3 blast that had USC leaving the Wildkittens behind, 41-33.

The Wildkittens retaliated with their own rally to cut their deficit to 39-41 entering the final canto.

The lead changed hands several times in the final stretch until the Baby Warriors finally pulled away in the last five minutes by unloading a short but telling six-to-one burst that busted the game open.

USC (55)—Codilla 17, delos Santos 11, Alocillo 8, Bercede 7, Ferolino 5, Otida 5, Omolon 2. CIT (48)—Labagala 12, Quiroga 9, Cabrera 7, Ybañez 5, Augosto 5, Aranas 4, Santos 3, Almario 2.
