Chiongbian: Logically illogical guys in the country clubs
By Edgar R. Chiongbian

How about that, Tiger Woods! He’s back to his old self and maybe even better. But, is he fueled by vengeance? Only Tiger can answer that. He is on a streak with five straight PGA wins and yet is still talking about the past, which he never did before. I’m sure he wouldn’t bring this out on himself but only through the prodding of the media. Nevertheless, he sure looks very happy talking about the past.

Tiger said of the finals of Deutsche Bank Championship in 2003: “Vijay just flat out out-played me last time. I had the opportunity and I bogeyed, what 14 there… then he birdied 15… This year I just felt that I was playing well enough to catch Vijay on that front nine and I was able to do it earlier than I thought I would…”

Tiger’s shooting binge of two eagles and two birdies in the first seven holes is simply amazing. Vengeance or not, we don’t care, just let him play and show us some outstanding golf.

Is golf a gentleman’s game? Yeah, I can dig that! But maybe we should re-examine and see what is really going on. The best people I have met, I met in the golf course. The worst people I met, I also met in the golf course. Is this a standstill? I don’t think so. I know that we spend a lot of time in the golf course, but like most of us, we spend more time outside of golf. Many of our friends are golfers, but not all our good friends are golfers.

In perspective, bad people in golf are limited only to a handful or more exactly one handfull. What is weird and ironic is, why one person who is notably nasty in one club can be decent in another club. This is not suppose to happen in a normal environment and it defies logic.

Logic you say? I believe this happens because of bad intentions. This one person may think he is already somebody in that club and still needs to work himself up in another club. That, is pure logic. But this does not happen only in golf clubs but in any club, including civic clubs.

A guy I knew once approached me recently and said that I mentioned him in my column rather vaguely and said that I should not beat around the bush and just say who’s who. I pondered about this for a few days and I figured out why I do this. It is for the respect of the person and to blatantly call him a jerk or an a__hole may be too direct, don’t you think?

There is talk around the country club that a member is demanding absolute respect from the caddies or umbrella girls and wants them to use Mister before his last name, whether they are talking to him or to anyone. He overheard a discussion that mentioned his name without the word “mister” and he got very upset.

He scolded the caddy/umbrella girl and would not accept an apology because he wanted the person suspended. My take on this is that he should wear a tuxedo or a suit when playing golf, and then maybe everyone will address him Sir or Mister. And this will be total respect for what he is wearing, not for his person.

Today is the arrival date of our Rotarian guests from Singapore, Tawau, Kota Kinabalu and Bangkok for our big RC Cebu medical mission and mango tree planting in Candulawan, Minglanilla. This is a joint project that is spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Cebu under president Jun Jereza and chairman Jonathan Gesalem.

The project will benefit the folks in Minglanilla and wil give them a livelihood program that can be passed on for generations. Gov. Gwen Garcia and Mayor Selma will be in attendance. At the completion of this project the Rotary Club of Cebu and their sister clubs would have spent a million pesos for the project.

GOLF TIP. You can use some rule of thumb when faced with windy conditions and elevation problems. The usual problem with this is that your indecision causes you to think rather than hit the shot properly, because you are not convinced of your decision.

If the wind is against or behind you, just add or subtract one club for every 10 mph of wind. Side winds are more about direction adjustments rather than distance, so take one more club and shorten your backswing to keep the ball down.

In elevation situations, take one extra club for every 25 feet of elevation. Subtract clubs the same way for downhill shots. And remember that greens that have bunkers, creeks and trees can make the flag look closer than it is. Trust your yardage not your eyes.
