Three Cebuanos win in first round

Three Cebuanos pulled first round victories against their opponents in the 2006 Surigao City Mindanao Open Chess Tournament at the Maharlika Training Center in Lipata.

Fide Master Anthony Makinano, wielding the white pieces, defeated Ernie Calumpag after 38 moves of the Owens Opening at Board Two, while Carlos Moreno III, defeated Jumil Dagaas in 34 moves of the Sicilian Defense. Mandaue City’s Eden Diano also scored a win.

Winners

In other round one results in the top boards of the three-day chessfest, the tournament’s top-seed National Master (NM) Elmer Sumngat won over Joseph Caballes in 36 moves of the King’s Indian Defense at board one; Jimmy Diano over Vadeth Esma in 25 moves of the Sicilian Defense; and NM Levi Mercado over Michael Canda in 56 moves of the Queen’s Gambit Declined.

Also, Cantillan Open champion NM Ernesto Fernandez beat Reynaldo Castillo in 35 moves of the Sicilian Defense, while NM Ernesto Absin won over Roman Concepcion in 36 moves of the King’s Indian Defense.

Johnell Balquin defeated Gaude Cotelo in 34 moves of the French Defense, while Ferdinand Leysa defeated Roger Dimayuga in 35 moves of the Pirc Defense. NM Abdullah Unding also defeated Daniel Dumale in 44 moves of the Sicilian, and Famie Fazon beat Gary Evangelista in 26 moves of the Queen’s Gambit Accepted. (JAF)
