Talk back: I have yet to r to report news of the complaint fairly and accurately.
Bureau of Immigration Regional Director Geronimo S. Rosas Wednesday afternoon faxed this statement to Sun.Star:
“This has reference to today’s issue of Sun.Star Cebu (Sept. 6, 2006).
“Your paper carries on the front page the banner head in bold print ‘BI chief charged’ with a blow-up of my picture on it. I feel it is unfair because up to this hour I have yet to receive a copy of the alleged complaint against me. I hope this is not a trial by publicity because the alleged case has been magnified out of proportion.
“Trusting in your strict adherence to the principles of responsible journalism, I hope the issues will be presented in the spirt of accuracy and fair play.”
Editors’ reply: 1. Director Rosas can be sure that there is a complaint against him. The three English-language dailies in Cebu carried the story. The reporters read copies of the complaint. His not getting his copy yet means slow mail, not absence of the complaint.
2. His side was sought and his initial comments were published in the same story and in yesterday’s paper (Page 2, Sept. 7, 2006). When he answers the complaint, the answer will also be published.
3. There is no trial by publicity. It’s only the glare of public scrutiny that all public officials must be ready to face.
4. Thank you for the reminder about responsible journalism. A sense of that responsibility precisely prompted Sun.Star to report news of the complaint fairly and accurately.
