Bitoon draws Nolte, shares lead with 2 IMs

Three International Masters shared the lead after round nine of the RP Chess Selection Tournament for the Qatar Asian Games at the SM Mall of Asia yesterday.

Cebuano Richard Bitoon, handling the black pieces, settled for a draw with NM Rolando Nolte in 33 moves of the Sicilian Defense at board two to register 7.5 points, along with Darwin Laylo and Oliver Dimakiling.

Lone GM

Darwin also drew with GM Nelson Mariano II, the only GM who played in the tournament, at board one. Dimakiling, wielding the white pieces defeated IM Barlo Nadera of Mandaue City in 42 moves of the Slav Defense at board three.

Mariano, IMs Ronald Dableo and Ronald Bancod and NMs Rolando Nolte and Joeseph Perez, are tied with seven points to share the fourth to eighth spots.

In a separate event, Cebu’s latest Fide Master, Anthony Makinano, NM Levi Mercado and Jimmy Dano also share the lead after round five of the Surigao City Mindanao Open Chess Tournament in Lipata yesterday.

Makinano, wielding the black pieces, defeated NM Ernesto Fernandez, who bagged the P100,000 top purse in the recently concluded Cantillan Open, in 34 moves of the Alekhine Defense at board one.

Dano, with the black pieces, beat NM Abdullah Unding in 42 moves of the Benko Opening at board two.

Mercado, on the other hand, downed Famie Fazon in 42 moves of the Sicilian Defense at board three.

Other results

Round six was still ongoing at press time with Dano taking the white pieces against Makinano at board one, while Mercado, with the white pieces,going against Absin at board two.

Also in round five, NM Ernesto Absin defeated Jhonnel Balquin in 48 moves of the Reti Opening; Cebuano Carlos Moreno III defeated Cyril Garces in 56 moves of the French defense; Alejandro Monteros scalped Ferdinand Leysa; Basilio Pandan drew with Cyrus Donasco; Marcialito Penera defeated Robert Reyna; and Johnny Corrales won against Manie Yuson in 53 moves.
