Gregorio bags second Coach of the Year award

For his extraordinary efforts in turning a ragtag team into a championship-caliber squad, Purefoods Chunkee Giants head coach Ryan Gregorio, plucked his second PBA Coach of the Year plum.

The 34-year-old Gregorio, who bested Red Bull Barakos coach Yeng Guiao for the accolade, will by feted tomorrow during the 2006 PBA Press Corps Awards Night at Kamayan-Padre Faura in Manila.

Second

The Virgilio “Baby” Dalupan Trophy is the second in four years for Gregorio, who steered the Giants to a second-place finish in the Fiesta Conference and to the championship in the Philippine Cup.

The Giants will be having a double celebration during awards night after Purefoods governor, Rene Pardo, also bagged the Danny Floro Trophy as Executive of the Year.

Pardo became the most accomplished PBA top official last campaign by doing a good job in the Giants team front office despite having retired from his lofty position at Purefoods Corp. He is the second Purefoods official to win the Executive of the Year award after Simon Mos-sesgeld in 1997.

Gregorio, meanwhile, shared his first award with Coca-Cola’s Chot Reyes in 2002.

“The Coach of the Year award is the icing on the cake for me. Very rewarding considering the circumstances we’ve gone through. After 2002, we were on a tailspin. Winning the championship, my players winning individual awards and me winning Coach of the Year are huge positive developments for us,” said Gregorio.

“I was happy sharing the stage with coach Chot Reyes in 2002, but it feels better to be a solo winner,” Gregorio said.

Also to be given honor in the 13th staging of the annual PBAPC awards rites are Jean Marc Pingris as Best Defensive Player, Ronald Tubid as Mr. Quality Minutes, Danny Seigle as Comeback Player of the Year, Luisito “Boy” Cruz as Referee of the Year, and Denok Miranda, Larry Fonacier, Leo Najorda, Nino Canaleta and Paolo Bugia composing the All-Rookie Team.
