MLSDF expands football program
The M. Lhuillier Sports Development Foundation has added the Banawa Elementary School (BES) and the Camp Lapu-Lapu National High School (CLNHS) to its vaunted football program.
MLSDF, which also nurtured the Carmen National School into a football powerhouse in the youth division, launched their programs for BES and CLNHS yesterday at the Scoop forum at Baseline, together with coach Mario Ceniza, BES’ Lourdes Tolosa and CNHS’s Graziel Paninsoro.
MLSDF, with Graeme Mackinnon and Ceniza, started one of the most successful football programs in Carmen in the 1990s. They trained a group of kids who have never touched a football and turning them into one of the top players in the country. Among the success stories in Carmen are Michael Casas, and Arnie Pasinabo, who saw action for the national team.

MLSDF has also adopted the Canduman Elementary School three years ago and the young team has consistently placed within the top four of their age groups in football festivals.
“We chose the two (BES and CLNHS) because they are the deprived sector of the football community. Sometimes the teachers (in both schools) spend their own money to sustain their football team,” said Ceniza.
Ceniza has appointed Jerryl Enriquez to oversee the training at CLNHS, while the foundation is still looking at a point-person to handle BES. Ceniza will oversee the training of the two schools.
“This is just a start. We are going to spread ourselves wide. We are also looking at two other schools,” said Ceniza.
Aside from providing technical expertise, MLSDF will also hand out equipment to the school and will shoulder their expenses during tournaments.
“We want maximum exposure for the boys, so we will be joining a lot of tournaments,” said Ceniza.
Ceniza will train Grade one students in each school, and will also add another batch next year.
Both school’s principals have also expressed their thanks to MLSDF for choosing their schools.
“The success of the program will depend on these boys. Hopefully, with the support of the school and with the parents, we can sustain it,” Ceniza said. (ML)
