USJ-R, USC shut out foes

The Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) football tournament opened yesterday with two shutout victories at the Cebu City Sports Center.

University of San Jose-Recoletos USJ-R) pulled an easy 3-0 victory over University of Southern Philippines Foundation, while University of San Carlos (USC) trounced University of Cebu, 4-0.

USJ-R virtually brought the game to an early finish after scoring all three goals in the first half in a matter of 10 minutes, as USPF was reaping more yellow cards than goals.

Mark Buglosa sank the first goal in the 27th minute, followed by back-to-back goals by Jade Paghubasan in the 30th and 37th minutes to win the game, which was marked by a flashing of yellow cards.

Getting yellow cards were USPF’s Ian Boy Cadampog in the 33rd minute, and Joy Iway in the 63rd minute. USJR’s Franco Cedullo was booked in the 66th minute.

In the other game, Albert Nangkil led USC’s assault after scoring two goals in the final half for the victory.

Pomposo Atillo banged in the game’s first goal early in the 6th minute for a 1-0 halftime lead.

Five minutes into the closing half, Nangkil slipped the goal past UC goalie to extend its lead to 2-0.

Later, Ryan Lim pounced on the UC’s goalie’s blunder to pad the lead to 3-0.

Lim had hammered the ball but it went straight to UC’s keeper, who failed to hold on to it. Lim quickly slotted the ball in the back of the net.

Nangkil sealed the win with a goal in the 89th minute. (MCB)
